The scholarship is named after two charter members of the Austin Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Ps Fraternity, Inc. Marcellus Jack Anderson and Emory Wellington Hines.
Emory Hines was a graduate of Southern University. He went on to become an American football and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He coached at what is not Grambling State University and Southern University.
Marcellus Anderson graduated from the Ohio State University. He was extremely active in the Austin community and in state and national politics, serving as an advisor to Lyndon Johnson. In addition to many firsts, he made history by becoming the first African American admitted to membership in the Board of Realtors in Texas and received his real estate license from the Texas Real Estate Commission. He also served as a teacher at Sam Huston College in the 1940s.
The scholarship was established by the Austin Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in their memory. The scholarship is awarded to young men graduating from area high schools. In past years, it has also been awarded to students currently enrolled in Huston-Tillotson University, Texas State University, and the University of Texas at Austin, where Kappa Alpha Psi currently has undergraduate chapters advised by the Austin Alumni Chapter.
For many years, the scholarship was supported by the annual Anderson-Hines Scholarship Golf Tournament, which has been held on courses at Balcones Country Club, Star Ranch, Avery Ranch, and other courses in the Central Texas area.
With the formation of the 501(c)(3) Austin Kappa Education and Leadership Foundation in 2009, new opportunities arose to support this scholarship, including the annual Black and White Ball, where we recognize the scholarship recipients and recognize community leaders as well.
