Guide Right is a program for the educational and occupational guidance of youth; primarily, inspirational and informational in character. Its reach extends to high schools and colleges alike. In the latter, giving due attention to the needs of undergraduate members. Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Stewart and suggested at the twelfth National Conference of Kappa Alpha Psi, Guide Right became the fraternity’s national service program. Jesse Jerome Peters, later elected as the eighth National President, was chairman of the committee during the administration of W. Ellis Stewart. That insured adoption of the program as the fraternity’s National Service Project. The purposes of the Guide Right Service Program are:
- To place the training, experience, and friendly interest of successful men, at the disposal of youth needing inspiration
- To counsel regarding career asperations
Guide Right
The focus of Guide Right, from its inception, was to provide scholarships to needy and talented students, and to inform young people of professions and career options. Kappa Alpha Psi’s commitment to young people is well established, and our Guide Right efforts, both individual and collective, can continue to serve as a mechanism to “inspire service in the public interest”. Mr. Mel Davis founded the Kappa Leadership Development League, under the guidance of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated in the early 1960’s. Mr. Leon Steward was also instrumental in its formation. The Kappa League stresses academic achievement, community service, college & career preparation, the enlistment of young men, and the total respect for young women.
